NTTDS Special Events

Aug 1, and Sept 5 FREE Music Jam at Eagle's Nest, 1-3 pm
We are sponsoring a FREE open music jam on Sundays Aug 1 and Sept 5, 1-3 pm, at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 8500 Arturo Drive, Dallas, 214-327-9563, (off of Lakeland, between Garland Rd and Ferguson Rd, South of White Rock Lake). All musicians are invited to attend.

Aug 7: Our August 7 Contra Dance at the Plaza will be a very special event. Former Dallas dancer Gary Blankenship and former Houston dancer Cheryl Joyal are getting married on July 9, in their new home town of Naperville, near Chicago. To include their Texas friends in the celebration, they are turning our Aug 7 contra dance into a wedding party! ADMISSION IS FREE. All are welcome to come celebrate with the newlyweds.

Sept 11: The 2nd Saturday Contra Dance will be at the Lutheran Church in Dallas instead of in Irving. Hank Morris from North Carolina will call, to music by Mimi & Friend.

Sept 25: There will be TWO dances at Sons of Hermann Hall on Elm street near Fair Park. From 2-5 pm there will be a Contra dance, featuring the Lost and Nameless Orchestra from Austin, with Luke Donev calling. The normal 4th Saturday English dance will follow from 8-11 pm. We will have a group supper at a nearby restaurant between the dances.
Lost and Nameless will also be playing at Trinity Hall in Allen on Friday night, and Trinity Hall at Mockingbird station on Saturday night.

Apr 29 - May 1, 2011: When In Doubt, Swing! dance weekend, featuring the band Magic Foot from Brattleboro, VT.

Contra dances are held on the 1st Saturdays of every month, 8-11 pm,
at the Plaza Arts Center, 1115 4th Ave, Carrollton, TX 75006
(Mapsco 12 C, near the intersection of Interstate 35 and Belt Line Road).
See pictures of it.
2nd Saturday Contra Dances are in Irving at either of two locations near each other.
3rd and 5th Saturday Contra Dances are at the First United Lutheran Church in Dallas.
Beginners are encouraged (but not required) to come to a brief introductory lesson at 7:45 pm.

One reason for the Irving dances is to grow new musicians and callers. Neither will be paid, but will gain real-world experience. If you have questions about the contra dance style of music, or if you need a list of tunes, contact Mimi Rogers, , Home: 214-357-8213, Cell: 214-403-2734. If you'd like to call, contact Linda Mrosko, , Home: 903-451-5535, Work: 903-677-5333, Cell: 903-288-4401
Our 2nd Saturdays in Irving have been building momentum; this is our "experimental, open band, open mic, chance to try new things" dance. We're tweaking a bit on the music side, to strengthen it both for the dancers and for musicians. Allison will now be playing piano. If anyone else wants to bring their keyboard, they're welcome, but the volume will need to be kept very low--if a piano is mic'ed, it will be Allison only. This added strong percussion should make it easier for everyone to hear the rhythm clearly for the dancers, in addition to making it clearer wherever you're seated as a musician. So Mimi will give us a strong (mic'ed) melody line, and Allison will do the same for rhythm. Bring your instruments, and your dancing feet!

English Country dances are held on the 4th Saturday of every month, 8-11 pm,
usually at Sons of Hermann Hall on Elm street near Fair Park.
Dancers are invited to bring a dance to lead. Music can be coordinated with
Martha Quigley, , H: 214-328-1938

Admission for all dances is $6 for members, $8 for non-members, and $2 for students with ID (worth it just for the music).
The maximum charge for a family is 2 adults and 2 children.

For all our dances, NO experience is needed.
We walk through every dance before doing it to the music.
NO partners are needed. We encourage everyone to change partners for every dance.
See the Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

Publicity

We are trying out several new ways to get publicity.

Sylvia has setup a Meetup Meetup account for us, where our dances will be listed for anyone to find. The more people a meetup has, the more likely others will take it seriously and try it. Please visit and sign up (it's free).

We're also on Facebook Facebook. You are encouraged to become a member.

Linda Mrosko has gotten us listed on the Dallas Morning News Guidelive web site.
Anyone can post reviews of events, so please go there and post a nice review for us.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED to help with producing, drinks, sound, and cleanup.
We'll train you! Here is the description of volunteer duties.
To help out, contact Vice President Lee Dixon , 214-828-9591.
